How many times can lightning strike, honestly? Clash of Clansand Clash Royale developer Supercell is determined to find out. The company unveiled Brawl Stars today, a new mobile multiplayer combat game where players fight against each other in a range of different game modes to collect crystals and take out opponents. The company showed the game off with an extended tournament live on YouTube, with a soft launch apparently on its way. There doesn't seem to be confirmation yet, but we can assume that this game will hit iOS and Android.

It's a top-down, multiplayer team-based hero shooter, on a basic level. If you had to slap a label on this thing, I'd say it comes to us in a loose way from the world of MOBAs, in which games like League of Legends and DOTA have been popularizing hero-based, isometric combat for years. There's a strong touch of Bomberman in there too, particularly with the shrinking arena mechanic. What we've seen so far looks intriguing: it's fast-paced but relatively well contained, with what looks like genuinely different gameplay from the different brawlers on offer. You can read a full description along with details on various game modes over on Reddit.

With recent releases, Supercell has decided to avoid cannibalizing its other games by shifting into entirely different genres. Supercell made its name with the city builder/RTS game Clash of Clans, which it sought to expand with the similar Boom Beach. After that, however, left the genre for Clash Royale, a kind of real-time, competitive tower defense game. After the massive success of Clash Royale it's shifted gears once again with Brawl Stars, clearly hoping to be able to keep all three games up in the top grossing category at once.

We don't know much about the game aside from what we've seen in this tournament, but Supercell is in an enviable position as one of the very few mobile developers with genuine name recognition as a company and not just for its games. People pay attention when new Supercell games come out, which gives them an opportunity to try out slightly stranger ideas with the knowledge they'll at least be able to get a solid player base going in the first few days. Stay tuned for more details.
